The wife just Kiboshed the idea of me getting a new bike. She was on board at first but I don’t think she realized that I was actually serious. Now that I had a buyer line up on my bike and the financing lined up on the KLR, pretty much all set to get the bike tomorrow she says “NOPE! No way! Are you out of your fucking mind?!”

Since I actually enjoy being married I figure it’s probably not a great idea to just go out and buy it anyway. I just texted the buyer for my bike to tell him I was gonna be keeping it.

Life sucks ballz sometimes.

“ She was on board at first but I don’t think she realized that I was actually serious .”

Women.

Not taking men seriously since...

Yeah.

At least you’re still married, right? Silver lining and all that.

You have a bike and she’s ok with you riding it. This is a good thing. But I understand the disappointment. Was she just not keen on the financials?

Why would you finance it if you were making money off your bike? Also why would she care? I really don’t understand any logic happening...

One lesson I learned early on in marriage is cash up front for hobbies. If I can't afford to save for it in advance, it just isn't in the cards. Same deal for my bikes as her horses.

Oof. That's rough. At least my wife doesn't even entertain my fantasies of re entering the world of motorbike ownership. I'll pour one out for you.

Yeah it was more a money thing than anything else. $80/month was too much for her to accept.

Definitely.

Pretty sure he couldn’t afford any bike if he suddenly became not-married, lol.

The money on my bike is not enough to buy it straight up. I was gonna be financing $4K to make up the difference.

She cares because that would be that much less money we could use on other things.

Marriage isn’t always easy and sometimes you have to compromise this I guess is one of those times.

I had similar issues before. I was also on the giving end, getting pissed at my wife for spending $200 on her hair. So, we made a budget - we figured out how much we make, how much we spend, how much we save, what is left for spending. We split the spending money in half, and whatever we spend it on, other person can’t give any shit to the spender. So, she spends money on her hair and spa, I buy gun training classes and spend $250 a month on my Abarth. We are both happy with this arrangement.

Damn that sucks.

I’ve had similar situations happen to me. Out test driving vehicles and find out all of a sudden that the wife wasn’t on board with a new vehicle purchase anyhow.

Straight answers aren’t always easy to come by.

Well at least you’ve still got a bike to ride! I’ve had a few friends actually sell their bikes with the intention of adding another only to have the rug pulled out from under them.

Keep your ear to the ground and look for a used one in the right price range, I see them in the sub $2k range every so often but they go QUICK! As someone who flips bikes as a hobby I cannot stress enough how awesome IFTTT is for this type of thing.

Go Used! You can get a KLR in good shape for under $2500 any day of the week. The hunt is half the fun! Replacing the Doohickey is the other half...

Yesterday (or whatever day) you said you were coming out with $1,000 ahead.

She has a fair point though. I thought you were making a $1,000 which is why I couldn’t understand her position of you having a new bike and more money.

This is me for every whim I’ve every had. My wife keeps me in check with reality though. Sometimes I ask her things knowing she’ll say no. I find it fun. Yesterday I asked for a ‘93 Toyota Pickup. Today I should bug her with something else.

I once spent a week stacking the shampoo bottles in the shower just to irritate her. My record is 5, which is conveniently all we had. It took her a week to tell me to stop; I thought it would only last a day.

I....I get bored easily and am very childish.

I already have a bike. I can’t see why selling my bike to buy an even slower bike would make me more likely to kill me.

She’s ok with me having a bike just not me paying for one.

$3600 seems to be the going rate in my area with 30,000+ miles. New was $6500 out the door.

I actually wanted a new one so I can say I got my first new bike.

I know right! Why not just tell me no from the start. Don’t wait till I’m literally 8 hours from taking it home to say no.

In ‘Berta they are pretty pricey used. $3,600 seems to be the going rate on 8-10 year old used models and those all have over 30,000kms.

I was making $1000 on the bike I was selling. But the selling price of my bike is less than the new bike. I was gonna but that money down.

I can see where the confusion is. If I was literally coming $1000 ahead I’d buy the bike even if she is unhappy about it.

Financing a $4000 for funsies purchase? I have to agree with the wife on this one. But keep in mind with bikes and craigslist and such, people will come down huge amounts. For instance I picked up a FZ6 a few months ago advertised at 3400 (or somewhere around there, maybe a bit higher). I paid the dude 2,000 on the dot. You’ll piss off people who get all up in arms about how much their precious is worth, but frankly that shit doesn’t matter. Lots of dudes have bikes sitting around that they haven’t ridden in months and now they need the space and forgot however much they paid for it years ago. So go offer people what YOU think their bike is worth. Fuck whatever number they wrote into some box on the internet.

$80 a month is less than a lot of peoples’ cellphone bills; it seems ridiculous to me that she would get so bent out of shape over a minuscule amount of money.

Kinja'd!!! Luc - The Acadian Oppo > DynamicWeight

I tend to keep my stuff for a long time so to me it was worth it to spend the bit extra up front and have something that I know the full history and was “mine” from the start. By the time I’d be done with this bike it would of paid itself over 2 or 3 times vs buying used for half the price.

Kinja'd!!! Luc - The Acadian Oppo > Variance

That’s exactly what I was thinking. $20 bucks a week for a brand new bike is not bad at all.

She’ll get mad over that but if I buy $20 a week worth of beer there is no issues whatsoever.

I’m not giving up just yet. I’ll give her a few days and she might be able to be won over.

if it was $200/month or something I’d understand but $80 bucks c’mon!

My boy is actually pretty good. He’ll only wake up once in the night and mom takes care of it. But I’ve always had issues sleeping even before he was born so 6hours a night is considered a good night.
